ART CANON - Thirty Artists. One Mona Lisa. Countless Ways to See
Dr. Tom and the Side Effects
The Art Canon is a modular educational musical designed for high schools, colleges, and community theatres. The lead role is intentionally written to be performed by either a male or female actor, allowing each production flexibility in casting.
The story follows the lead on a journey through thirty interpretations of the Mona Lisa, guided by three historical figures—Enheduanna, Imhotep, and Giorgio Vasari. Acting as mentors and narrators, they guide, cajole, instruct, and advise both the lead and the audience while helping shape each artistic interpretation. Throughout the production, they assist with costume transitions, provide stage direction to the thirty artists, and help move the story seamlessly from one artistic vision to the next.
Schools are encouraged to choose their own musical styles, choreography, staging, costumes, projections, and lighting—from a simple black-box production to a fully realized theatrical experience. Productions may even transform the entire stage into a living canvas, using scenery, lighting, projection, movement, and visual effects to immerse the audience in each artist's world. No two productions are intended to look or sound alike.
By combining theatre, music, visual art, dance, and technical theatre, The Art Canon becomes a collaborative learning experience that encourages creativity, interpretation, critical thinking, and the discovery of each student's own artistic voice.
